Graduated in 1974 Belarusian State University and started working at Institute of Physics Academy of Sciences of the BSSR new optics. Since 2008, he has served as Deputy Academician-Secretary of the Department of Physics, Mathematics and Informatics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, since 2012 — Chief Scientific Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, since 2014 — Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. In 2005-2011 he was the chairman of the Belarusian Physical Society. In 2009 he was elected a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, in 2014 — Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, in 2019 — foreign member of the RAS.
His scientific interests are focused on quantum optics and quantum informatics. He developed the theory of quantum fluctuations in nonlinear optical interactions and on its basis predicted a number of effects observed during the emission of photons by single atoms and molecules in various environments. Developed new methods and systems for quantum information technologies (quantum computers and quantum cryptography).
